The Hyundai Sonata is all new for 2020, and it’s a perfect showcase for Hyundai’s characteristic mix of attractive design and high-level features at an affordable price. The 2020 Sonata is not the best driver’s car in a class with a few dynamic standouts, but Hyundai has baked in decent handling and plenty of torque (at least in its optional turbocharged 1.6-liter engine; a non-turbo 2.5-liter engine is standard and a hybrid powertrain is also an option).
The interior is spacious and elegant, with just enough buttons on the dash to complement the functional, well-organized touchscreen infotainment system. If you want a car that hits luxury-brand benchmarks at an affordable price, the 2020 Hyundai Sonata could be just the thing.
From our initial impressions driving pre-production prototypes, we’re impressed by the 2020 Sonata. We think the styling, with its coupe-like proportions and thoughtful design details, is excellent. It looks complex yet cohesive, and far from anonymous—something that can’t always be said about midsize sedans.
On the performance front, the Sonata is competent, if not particularly noteworthy. The 1.6T turbocharged upgrade engine delivers torque more readily than the standard naturally aspirated unit, but neither provides thrilling acceleration. That could change with the arrival of the sport-tuned Sonata N-Line. Regardless, ride quality is comfortable and composed, and the cabin is pleasantly quiet.
The interior, too, looks and feels premium, featuring plentiful soft-touch surfaces, subtle color coordination, and ample front passenger space. Technology is a focus; available features include a large infotainment screen, digital instrument cluster, and side-view blind spot cameras.
